Something Lost I

Flamm x Auction House Stand: 104

Rachael Coward is an artist working across installation, printmaking and sculpture. Her interests lie in liminal spaces, heritage and place. In her current work, Rachael has been creating monuments to her lived experience based on thresholds and markers she finds in rural areas around where she lives in Cornwall. Her work attempts to extract the essence of these unassuming features, re-imagine them and present them in new contexts.

She is interested in the traces of human presence that are scattered across our landscapes. Often small and over-looked, they become part of our everyday lives and almost invisible as we adapt our ways of living around these structures. She likes to create works that respond to these traces that exist in an uncomfortable grey area, that sit on the border between strength and fragility, present and absent, and that move between two and three dimensions.

One of a series of collages, Something Lost I is derived from modular ceramic sculptures inspired by hardware. They comment on the use of stones as boundary markers, often incorporating hardware to enforce their territorial rule in rural spaces.
