Julie Mayer’s practice is concerned with the phenomenology and materiality of abstract painting. Psychological spaces are simultaneously revealed and concealed in an attempt to make visible a site of lived experience. Through the lens of feminism, Mayer's practice unpicks the patriarchal canon of Modernism's aesthetic ideologies and histories. Gender and sexuality is explored through gesture and traces of the body’s making.
